- In detail
A light harvesting of leaves may begin after plants have become established. It is best done in the early morning when the temperature is cooler, and the leaves are less likely to wilt. Full harvest should be done just before plants start to flower. Cut the entire plant 4"-6" above the ground to promote a second growth. Leaves are easily bruised when picking, so handle with care.
Additional:
The fresh flavor of basil is a lovely addition to marinades and a key ingredient to pesto sauce. It also works well with other herbs. Basil can also be used in potpourri, herbal bath mixtures, and perfumes. A great replacement for lettuce on sandwiches!
Basil, Sweet Growing and Maintenance Tips:
Pick off the flower buds before blooming to prevent smaller, stronger, acrid tasting leaves. Very easy to grow, basil requires full sun and fertile to average, well-drained soil.
